Carrie Underwood

Biography

Carrie Marie Underwood (born March 10, 1983) is an American country singer-songwriter who rose to fame as the winner of the fourth season of ''American Idol''.

Underwood's debut album, entitled "Some Hearts," was released on November 15, 2005, entering the Billboard 200 chart with 315,000 copies sold. The large first week sales of "Some Hearts" made it number one on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and the biggest debut of any country artist since the advent of the SoundScan system in 1991. "Some Hearts" has since been certified seven-times Platinum by the RIAA, and is the fastest-selling debut country album in the history of the SoundScan era.

"Inside Your Heaven", Underwood's first single, was released on June 14, 2005 in the U.S., debuting at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The album's second single, "Jesus, Take the Wheel" was released to radio on October 18, 2005. It reached number one for six consecutive weeks. The songwriters, Gordie Sampson, Brett James and Hillary Lindsey, were awarded the 2006 Grammy award for Country Song of the Year.

"Don't Forget to Remember Me", the second of Underwood's singles to be released to country radio, her fourth single overall, also proved successful, reaching number one on the Radio & Records Country Chart, number two on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, and number forty-nine on the Billboard Hot 100. "Don't Forget To Remember Me" was her second number one country single and third number one single overall.

Underwood's third country single, "Before He Cheats", hit number one on Billboard's Hot Country Songs, staying there for 5 consecutive weeks, marking Underwood's third country number one hit and her fourth number one hit overall. The song peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, achieving the slowest climb ever to the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.

Underwood's second album, "Carnival Ride," was released on October 23, 2007 and was certified double platinum as of December 14, 2007. "So Small" served as the lead single for the album and debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs at #20, making it the highest chart debut by a solo country female artist in 43 years of Nielsen BDS history. It eventually held the #1 spot for 3 consecutive weeks. It also became her fifth top 20 hit when it peaked at #17 on U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The second single, "All-American Girl", was released around December 2007. It also became a success by hitting #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs where it stayed there for 2 weeks. The third single, "Last Name", became Carrie's fastest single to hit #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs after only 13 weeks of its official release around April 2008. It stayed there for one week. It is also Carrie's sixth top 20 hit, reaching #19 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The song also won Underwood her third consecutive Grammy award in the Best Female Country Vocal Performance category.

Underwood released her third studio album, "Play On," on November 3, 2009. It debuted at #1 on the Top Country Albums chart and the all-genre Billboard 200. It features the #1 singles "Cowboy Casanova", "Temporary Home", and "Undo It", as well as the #2 single, "Mama's Song". To date, it has sold 1,933,000 copies in the United States, making it Underwood's third album to top the one million mark, and has been certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA.

Since winning American Idol, Underwood has become a multiple Grammy Award winner, a Grand Ole Opry inductee, a three-time Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association Female Vocalist winner, and the current ACM Entertainer of the Year. She is the first ever female artist to win back-to-back Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards for Entertainer of the Year (2009/2010).
