Lady GaGa

Biography

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (born March 28, 1986), better known by her stage name Lady Gaga, is an American pop singer-songwriter. She began performing in the rock music scene of New York City's Lower East Side in 2003 and enrolled at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She soon signed with Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. During her early time at Interscope, she worked as a songwriter for fellow label artists and captured the attention of Akon, who recognized her vocal abilities, and signed her to his own label, Kon Live Distribution.

She began her career performing in burlesque clubs and writing songs for artists such as Britney Spears and New Kids on the Block prior to releasing her debut album "The Fame" in August 2008.

"The Fame" peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and was subsequently certified triple platinum. The album also saw large success in Europe where it topped the charts in Germany and the U.K. Its first two singles, "Just Dance" and "Poker Face," peaked at #1 in the U.S. and went quadruple platinum. The singles were also successful internationally, reaching #1 in Australia, Canada and the U.K. The album spawned three more singles, "Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)," "LoveGame" and "Paparazzi," which reached the Top 10 in many countries worldwide, including #1 in Germany. "Poker Face" won the award for Best Dance Recording at the 52nd Grammy Awards, and was nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. "The Fame" was nominated for Album of the Year and it won the Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album. To date, "The Fame" has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide.

The success of the album led to plans of a deluxe edition, "The Fame Monster," which was ultimately released as a standalone EP in November 2009. It peaked at #1 in Australia and in the U.S. reached #5 on the Billboard 200, where it has been certified platinum. Its lead single, "Bad Romance," became an international hit, reaching #1 in 12 countries and #2 in the U.S. It also won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance while its accompanying music video won the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video. Equaling the amount of Grammy nominations her debut received, "The Fame Monster" garnered a total of six and the album won for Best Pop Vocal Album and earned her a second-consecutive nomination for Album of the Year. Other singles, "Telephone" and "Alejandro," were Top 10 hits in many countries.

Gaga's first compilation, "The Remix," was released in 2010. It peaked at #6 on the Billboard 200 and reached the Top 5 in Canada and the U.K.

The lead single and title track from her album, "Born This Way" was released in 2011. It reached #1 in 17 countries and in the U.S. it became her third single to top the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. A second single, "Judas" was also released in 2011 and peaked at #10 on the Hot 100. The album was released shortly after and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, her first #1 album on the chart. The album sold over one million copies in its first week becoming only the 17th album since 1991 to do so. It marked the highest first week sales of an album since 2005.

Her contributions to the music industry have garnered her numerous achievements including five Grammy Awards, among 12 nominations, two Guinness World Records and the estimated sale of 15 million albums and 51 million singles worldwide. Billboard named her as the Artist of the Year in 2010 and ranked her as the 73rd Artist of the 2000s decade.
